My Fascination with Doors

Updated: Aug 4, 2019

I have a fascination with doors. I’m not sure where the obsession began, but I do know that when I travel I find myself taking pictures of doors not just people or buildings, but specifically doors. In fact, I even have a whole Pinterest album dedicated to the colors, styles, and locations of doors. Fancy doors. Brightly painted doors. Rustic doors. I like the archways and the beams and the different ways that doors show personality.

I’m sure there are countless interpretations of this from the psychology stand point. Could be I like opportunities. Could be I appreciated structure. Maybe it’s that I like entering into new adventures. Most would say that doors offer a positive outlook, a beginning.

That’s just a few ways to view them.

I know I don’t like goodbyes. I know that when people say metaphorically that "when one door closes another one opens", I get edgy. I want to ask why? Why does the door have to close for another to open?

I usually feel like slamming a door when I'm upset, softly closing a door when my child is sleeping, or keeping a door open when I want a breeze to enter our home. What I am most grateful for, however, is that no matter how I choose to open or close a door in my physical life, I only have to open one Door to meet with my Heavenly Father.

John 10:9 says "I am the door: by me if any man enter in, he shall be saved, and shall go in and out, and find pasture." What a relief to know that Jesus is the Door to everlasting love and life.

I will probably always have a fascination with doors, and I as I ponder on them, it's good to know that they will be a tangible reminder of my faith.

How do you feel about doors? Do you admire them or shun them? Are they even on your radar?
